Question: One of our eighth graders asked me last week, “Who are your favorite Phillies, Eagles and 76ers players ever?”
Father Kevin: I enjoy mixing in the occasional sports or pop culture question here, and I had to apologize to him after I thought about it and answered, because I knew he likely wouldn’t know any of the players, who played long before he was born!
My favorite Phillie? Two-time All-Star second baseman Tony Taylor, who played 15 years with the Phillies starting in 1960, is a member of the career 2,000-hits club (2,007 in 19 years) and was a great fielder.
My favorite Eagle? Hall of Fame wide receiver Tommy McDonald, who had one of the best pair of hands in NFL history and was one of the toughest little guys ever. Tommy was a longtime usher and devout parishioner at Mother of Divine Providence in King of Prussia before he recently was called Home to the Lord.
My favorite 76er? I had many here too: Archie Clark, Wali Jones, Matty Guokas, Julius Errrrrving, Mo Cheeks, but by far my favorite was Wilt Chamberlain, “The Dipper.” In my book, the greatest of all time.
